Korean Air said on Friday it would target a 29 percent rise in this year's operating profit as fuel surcharges and healthy overseas travel demand by Koreans are likely to offset higher fuel costs. The airline said in a filing to the Korea Exchange that the carrier aimed to post a KRW819 billion won (USD$868 million) operating profit this year, compared to a KRW636.8 billion profit in 2007. Korean Air also aims to lift this year's sales to KRW9.46 trillion from KRW8.81 trillion in 2007 while it would cut investment plans by 21 percent to KRW681.6 billion. On Thursday, Korean Air said it swung to a steeper-than-expected quarterly loss, hit by higher fuel costs and a weaker won currency. Korean Air's outlook is strong this year as the company is likely to offset fuel costs with surcharges and will benefit from healthy demand for overseas travel in Asia's fourth-largest economy, especially for the Beijing Olympics. But higher fuel prices and a slowdown in the global economy may cloud the picture and growing competition with budget carriers, especially Chinese airlines, is also likely to cut Korean Air's profits, analysts said. Singapore Airlines Earnings at Singapore Airlines beat expectations. Singapore Airlines beat market expectations Friday by reporting a 51 percent rise in quarterly operating profit, lifted by strong demand in global travel and higher ticket prices. But the airline also warned of an uncertain outlook because of turmoil in financial markets. Singapore Airlines took delivery of the first of 19 Airbus A380 superjumbo jets in October after a two-year delay. The airline has been able to charge ticket premiums of up to 20 percent on the daily Singapore-Sydney route and will start a daily flight to London from the middle of March after receiving its third A380. But analysts warn that premium business travel will be cut sharply this year because of chaos in world financial markets and a possible U.S. recession. Feb 3, 2008 Southwest Airlines Consolidation will create opportunities for Southwest, CEO says. Consolidation in the airline industry will provide an opportunity for Southwest Airlines, regardless of whether the carrier merges with another airline, CEO Gary Kelly said. "We have enough exposure to other airlines in the U.S. that if they shrink, we'll benefit," Kelly said. "And of course, I wouldn't eliminate the possibility that we would participate in some form or fashion in consolidation." Feb 3, 2008 Southwest Execs Lighten Up on Holdings. As shares of Southwest Airlines try to take off from their lows, two insiders at the company have sold $725,000 in the Dallas-based company's stock. On Monday Chairman of the Board Herbert Kelleher sold 50,000 shares for $604,500, an average of $12.09 a share. Kelleher, who has served as chairman since 1978, continues to own three million shares directly, and 300,280 shares indirectly through a family limited liability company. Also on Monday President and director Colleen Barrett sold 10,000 shares for $121,000 or $12.10 a share. Barrett continues to own 43,576 shares directly and 1,474 shares indirectly. Feb 3, 2008 Virgin Group Virgin Group is in talks with a potential Russian partner about launching an airline in the market, Chairman Richard Branson said in Moscow yesterday. "Now is the time for Virgin to come to Russia," he said at a news conference during an investor conference he is attending. His remarks were reported widely. "We are in discussions with a Russian partner," he said. "We will announce in three months who that partner will be." Branson added that it would be better to do "something from scratch" rather than partner with an existing carrier. "You can make sure of the quality and avoid all of those cobwebs you might otherwise get," he explained. "We're looking to take on the airlines here." He promised that the Virgin carrier "will be the best" in the market and noted that Russians don't fly nearly as often as people in Western Europe. "There's a lot of potential to take business away from the rail service," he said. Feb 3, 2008 VLM Airlines VLM Airlines carried 745,781 passengers last year, up 9% over 2006. Scheduled passengers rose 6% to 697,781 while the number flying on charter or ACMI flights climbed 62% year-over-year. Feb 3, 2008
