NASA aims to launch Atlantis next week. NASA officials said a backup system will cool Atlantis if the shuttle's Freon hose fails. They also noted that the shuttle's crew would not be threatened even if the hose fails. NASA hopes to launch the shuttle next week. Feb 3, 2008

The US Navy on Thursday tested the world's most powerful electromagnetic railgun. The goal of the project is to develop a weapon capable of hitting a target more than 200 nautical miles away with a non-explosive slug. US Navy bases fast-attack submarines in Puget Sound. All three Seawolf-class fast-attack submarines are now based in Puget Sound in Washington state as part of a Pentagon plan to improve security in the Pacific Rim. Boeing, Bell, Textron

Boeing, Bell Team Win $38.6M Navy Deal. A strategic alliance of Boeing and Textron Inc.'s Bell Helicopter operation received a $38.6 million Navy contract to repair items on the V-22 Osprey aircraft, the Defense Department said late Thursday. The contract includes two option periods that would bring the total value of the deal to $116.2 million if exercised. The Osprey, a tilt-rotor vertical/short takeoff and landing aircraft, is jointly built by Boeing (nyse: BA - news - people ) and Bell. Boeing is responsible for the fuselage and all subsystems, digital avionics and fly-by-wire flight-control systems, while Bell is responsible for the wing, transmissions, the rear part of the aircraft, rotor systems and engine installation. Shares of Chicago-based Boeing were down 17 cents to $83.01 Friday. And shares of Textron (nyse: TXT - news - people ), based in Providence, R.I., were up 61 cents at $56.72. Feb 3, 2008

General Dynamics

General Dynamics lands $459.8M contract extension. General Dynamics has received an addition to a contract to provide construction and other services for a 10th dry cargo and ammunition ship for the Navy's T-AKE program. The contract boost is worth $459.8 million. Feb 3, 2008

ITT

Military s dependence on contractors makes it hard to fire private-sector partners. ITT Federal Services International, a defense contractor hired to maintain battle gear for U.S. troops in Iraq, repeatedly failed to do the job right. Combat vehicles ITT declared as repaired and ready for action flunked inspections and had to be fixed again. Equipment to be sanitized for return to the United States was found caked with dirt. And ITT s computer database for tracking the work was rife with errors. Feb 3, 2008

Northrop Grumman

Northrop robots to work security at Super Bowl. Robots produced by Northrop Grumman Remotec subsidiary will be used to bolster security during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and Northrop will be providing technical support, repairs and service, the company said Friday. Northrop's Remotec subsidiary will assist the Phoenix and Glendale Police Departments by supporting the robots which are being provided by multiple agencies including the Arizona Department of Public Safety; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; and the Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale and Phoenix, Ariz. police departments, according to a release. Remotex will also provide spare robots, according to a release. The company will assist more than 800 officers from numerous agencies patrolling a two-square mile security zone around the stadium, Northrop said in a release. Feb 3, 2008

Northrop Grumman

Defective valve delays submarine's delivery. A defective steam valve supplied by a vendor forced Northrop Grumman's Newport News shipyard to delay delivery of the attack submarine North Carolina. "The defect was the result of the vendor's manufacturing process, which has now been corrected," shipyard spokeswoman Jerri Dickseski said. "The valve has been replaced and is pending final retest." The submarine is expected to undergo a final sea trial within the next two weeks before it is delivered to the US Navy. Feb 3, 2008
